June 21st National Indigenous Peoples Day

Reading Indigenous Voices in Honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day and Beyond

By Jennifer Robinson

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada—a time to honour the cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities. It’s also an important moment to seek out and celebrate Indigenous-authored books that offer essential perspectives—deeply personal, often political, and always resonant. Whether through memoir, fiction, poetry, or historical accounts, Indigenous literature brings voice to lived experiences and worldviews too often silenced. These stories connect readers to land, language, and legacy, while fostering deeper understanding and respect. Reading Indigenous work encourages reflection, connection, and celebration not just for a special day, but all year long.
