Drop anchor and pick up The Unsinkable Great James because you may want to read this novel in one sitting. Changing course to an emotional romance story from my normal genres proved to be a great reading adventure.
Meet Greta James, an indie rock star facing one of life’s hardest moments during her sophomore album release. She suddenly drops everything to leave on an Alaskan cruise for a week. Sailing away from celebrity onto a cruise ship (that is basically a floating city) proves to be the best remedy for her emotional turmoil.
Part of the appeal for me was the setting. I often choose books to get a “feel” for an experience (pandemic aside, I have thought of taking a cruise) and this character was apprehensive about the journey, so you get a more accurate picture.
Amidst the Alaskan tour, Greta has to come to terms with a difficult relationship with her father, an awkward break-up, and a new bond with someone experiencing their own turbulent “waters.” This is not your typical romance read – you may have moments that bring you to tears, but it’s balanced with humour and quirky learning moments. I enjoyed Greta’s admission that the rock star life includes a lot of practice, practice, practice, coupled with all the excitement. All aboard!
