A book set in a remote area in the mountains of Wales about a reality game show where someone ends up dead…sounds like a winner to me! I enjoy Clare MacKintosh mysteries/thrillers/police procedurals and was instantly intrigued when I read the premise of her latest offering.
Seven unsuspecting contestants think they’ve signed up for a survivalist type show and are infuriated to learn that the show is actually about uncovering their deepest, darkest and most personal secrets. The concept of the show: if a player can guess the truth about another player’s secret, the exposed player will be eliminated and their secret will be exposed live on air.
Everyone at the mountainside location has reasons for not wanting to be outed; some secrets would destroy families or careers, others would cause deep personal humiliation if revealed. Panic sets in as all parties attempt to hide the skeletons in the closet that could cause them harm. Then, to make matters even more intense someone is murdered causing more chaos, lies and back-stabbing. DC Morgan, who was introduced in The Last Party, and her cohorts attempt to solve the mysterious death while keeping everyone involved out of harm’s way.
A Game of Lies is the second book in the DC Morgan series. It is a fast-paced, well-plotted story that can also be enjoyed as a stand-alone.
